Lady Blues Earn Division Nod

For two consecutive weeks, a Jersey Blue women’s soccer player was named the Division III Player of the Week.
First, Brookdale freshman midfielder Sara Shaughnessy (Howell) was honored for her efforts in a 2-0 week for the Jersey Blues.
The Howell native capped off the week by recording a hat trick against Cumberland County College, scoring all three goals of the game on four shots.
She now leads the team for the season with 11 goals, and sits eighth in the Nation for scoring with 36 points (15 goals, 6 assists).

New Nets Season Can Only Improve

  Last year, not much went right for the New Jersey Nets, who finished 12-70. In fact, the only thing that went right was the fact that they did not break the 1972 Philadelphia 76ers record of the worst team in NBA history. The Sixers went 9-73 that year.

Financial Aid Office - Temporary Move to MAN 204

Please be advised that effective Wednesday, October 13, 2010, the Financial Aid office has been temporarily relocated to MAN 204.

To reach the new location in the Main Academic Complex/North, just walk north (right) when leaving the CAR building, then go upstairs to the second floor. Or ask any Brookdale employee for help.

Trustees Ponder Tobacco Ban

      The Board of Trustees will take about 30 days to decide if smoking will be banned on all Brookdale campuses.

     Board members unanimously voted Oct. 14 to “lodge” college President Peter F. Burnham’s plan to eliminate the “consumption or use” of all tobacco products at the school.  A final vote on the ban will take place during a public meeting of the board scheduled for Nov. 11.

2010 New Jersey Devils Season Preview

It wasn’t easy, and it certainly didn’t come without a price, but this past off-season, the New Jersey Devils signed explosive wingman Ilya Kovalchuk to a 15-year, $100M contract that will plant #17 in New Jersey until the year 2025.

After the National Hockey League voided the first contract of 17 years/$102 million, the Devils were slammed with a $3 million fine, loss of next year’s third-round pick in the NHL draft and a loss of a first-round pick in one of the next four years, at the Devils choosing.

Student Life Board President Alec Moran is asking college Governance to add another student representative to the Steering Committee.

"I would like Governance to clarify the role of the student representative," Moran said during the Oct. 5 forum. "We should (also) increase the student representatives to two for continuity and consistency."

President Obama and Dr. Jill Biden take part in the White House Summit on Community Colleges, at the White House, Oct. 5.

The White House today is holding their first-ever summit on community colleges. The Vice President wife, Dr. Jill Biden and a professor of English at Northern Virginia Community College is moderating the session which includes small group breakout sessions looking at developing new educational goals.

Editorial-Smoking Ban Policy Change: Too Fast, Too Furious

On Oct 14, the Board of Trustees is expected to approve the ban of smoking at all Brookdale campuses January 1, 2011.
The only place that you will be allowed to smoke on any and all Brookdale property in in your car.
The usual path that is taken when it comes to making any changes in BCC policy involves at the very least a year-long study that is done by a Governance-chosen committee which looks at every single facet of the proposed idea.

New Fitness Center Fee Future Uncertain

As Brookdale welcomes students to yet another academic year, it also opens a brand-new fitness center.
As written in the membership package, the mission of the fitness center : “Is to provide a safe and friendly workout enviroment, supported by professional services that promote life long health and wellness.”
But for many students, the issue is the center’s cost. Currently, fees, ranging from $10 a day to $200 a year, are required for anyone who enters the fitness center.
