The Jersey Blues men’s and women’s basketball teams won Region XIX (19) Division III Championships on Saturday night.
The men have made it three consecutive Regional championships after defeating second seeded Delaware County College 85-81 on Saturday Night.
The Blues were down by nine (44-35) at the half, but they carried some much needed momentum into the locker room after a 9-2 run to finish the first half. They picked up where they left off in the second half.
The game was close throughout the second half, as Brookdale continued to narrow the deficit. They took the lead with 1:12 left after David Rosado sank two free throws, putting the Blues up 80-79. They went on to win 85-81, outscoring Delaware Valley 50-37 in the second half.
Jaimik Moore was named tournament MVP after scoring 21 points while adding 11 rebounds and two steals. Cory Soanes also added 21 points along with 12 rebounds, six steals and four blocked shots.
The women advanced by defeating second seeded Cumberland by a score of 71-54. The victory did not come without cost, however.
A few seconds into the game, Paxington Reddington, who is the team’s leading scorer, had to leave the game after suffering what appears to be a serious knee injury that will likely end her season.
Teammate Lauren Bowler stepped up in a huge game, scoring 17 second-half points, (19 total,) along with nine rebounds, three assists and two steals to win tournament MVP honors. They led 29-20 at halftime and never looked back.
Samantha Carlson double-doubled with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Marina Lukianov scored 16 points. Marya Trapp scored 11 points to go along with 13 rebounds, seven in the second half, and three blocks.
The men will now travel to the NJCAA division III national tournament looking to repeat as National Champions.
The tournament takes place March 13-15 at SUNY Sullivan in Loch Sheldrake, New York. They will play a quarterfinal game against Lincoln College of New England on March 13 at 5 p.m. The women will travel to Rochester, Minnesota for their tournament, which also takes place on the 13-15th at the UCR Regional Sports Center.
