The Brookdale women’s soccer team wrapped up their regular season with a 5-1 victory against Sussex on Oct. 15. The team finished the season with a 14-1 record overall and went undefeated in the Garden State Athletic Conference. The team was also ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA Division III rankings at the end of the regular season.
Katie Miller is in her third year as head coach of the team, and her fifth year coaching at Brookdale. When asked about which players were important to the team’s success, Miller had this to say.
“We have 16 players that can all play on this team, and they are all great kids,” Miller said. “But some of the key players were sophomore Chelsea James, sophomore Lauren Bowler, freshman Caroline Duerr, and our goalie, sophomore Erin Kinneman.”
Miller played soccer for Brookdale during the 2005-2006 seasons. During the 2006 season, they were the national runners-up after winning the conference and the regionals, but losing in the finals of the NJCAA tournament.
By clinching the No. 1 seed, the Blues gained a bye and advanced right to the regional finals against Bergen on Oct. 26, which they won 10-0, becoming Region XIX champions.
“The girls played well. They played as a team and played with heart,” Miller said of her team’s performance in the regional championship game. “Midfielder Chelsea James was named offensive MVP, scoring three goals. Defender Lauren Bowler was defensive MVP. Midfielder Keara Homan played great and supported all of her teammates on the field. Forward Alexa Masino also scored four goals. She played great as well. I couldn’t be any more proud of these girls! They are great kids who all deserve it!”
The Blues will be competing in the 2013 NJCAA Division III National Tournament, which will be held at Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden, New York  Nov. 7-10.
