After 20 years, the “Non-Alcoholic Happy Hour” at BCC will come to an end.
The event was started by Nurse Gwendolyn Evans, who will be retiring this year.  Evans started the event under Dr. Donald Dickson.
“The belief was that we could educate students so they would socialize with each other and enjoy themselves without overindulging alcohol or other substance use,” said Evans.
“It has always been a very successful event. We would provide alcoholic related information, conduct blood pressure and diabetes screenings, make students aware of AA and NA meetings either at BCC or locations,” said Evans.
The non-alcoholic happy hour was celebrated for the final time on Tuesday Oct. 22 during the college hour in the MLK lounge. The event drew a large crowd and offered free food and non-alcoholic beverages.
Evans added “Peter Bell a nationally known author; and expert on addictions presented seminars on several occasions regarding alcohol addiction at Brookdale. The event was always well attended, as he always talked about cultural awareness as it relates to alcoholism. The Student Health Center can direct any interested party to the nearest AA meeting. There are pamphlets available in the Center also.”
