'Laugh At Lunch' Series Off To Great Start With Adam Mamawala

Students and faculty gathered in the Navesink rooms in the Student Life Center on Sept. 24 for an hour of food and fun, and Adam Mamawala quickly had the crowd giggling during BCC’s monthly Laugh at Lunch program.
Mamawala, who has been named one of Funny or Die’s “30 Under 30 Comedians to Watch,” gave Brookdale a set of jokes ranging from silly to dirty-mind-funny. Soon after Mamawala’s “hit-or-miss” joke about the children’s game Battleship (ha-ha,) he tested the crowd’s response to some more eye-brow-raising material. One of the loudest audience reactions was when Mamawala discussed the New Jersey seat belt law’s slogan, “Click it or ticket.”
He is not against buckling up when driving, but “takes issue with any law that rhymes.” He went on, “…but if it’s gonna’ rhyme, I think a better law would be ‘Click it or lick it…’” As the joke progressed and finally reached a nothing-left-forthe- imagination type of punch-line, audience feedback evolved from chuckles to belly-laughs.
Tamecca James could be heard laughing loudly throughout the hour-long performance. “I enjoyed him a lot; I’m so glad I came!” said the 40-year-old nursing major.
James wasn’t alone. Three freshman students who attended the program to fulfill a first-year requirement for Brookdale were laughing throughout Mamawala’s set. It seems that whether you had to be there or you wanted to be there, you had a good time.
The Student Activities Board, which sponsored the event, set up the Navesink rooms with tables and chairs facing the stage. As guests arrived, there were three large projectors in the front of the room displaying the schedule of programs that Student Activities Board is sponsoring this semester.
Mamawala, raised in Hillsborough, NJ, currently lives in Hoboken, and performs throughout New York City and at colleges across the country. Over pizza and cookies, the Brookdale community enjoyed his jokes. For more information, see www.adammamawala.com.
