‘Buy a Board’ to Help Rebuild Belmar

Bringing the beaches back to life is a huge step to returning our coast and lives back to normalcy. It’s been six months since Sandy hit and most beaches are still closed to the public and being worked on, racing to open by the beginning of summer.
People want to help rebuild the places they love but don't know how to get involved or where to start. Belmar however, is giving citizens an easy way to give back with their “Buy A Board” campaign. The program is designed to allow residents, visitors, and anyone who wants to help donate money to rebuilding the boardwalk, essentially “buying a board.”
Belmar Beach, which has been voted the number one beach in Monmouth County and number five beach in all of New Jersey, was left in shambles after Superstorm Sandy. Ripping apart the whole boardwalk, flooding oceanfront businesses, and covering the streets with inches of sand, Sandy took a place of beauty and turned it into a disaster zone. “Belmar has had a boardwalk every summer since 1875, and with everyone's help, this summer will be no different,” said Matt Doherty, Mayor of Belmar, on the town’s website.
The levels of donation are set up so that anyone can help. The prices range from “Beach Bum,” a $25 donation, to “Big Kahuna,” a five thousand dollar donation.
Along with the joy of giving, contributors will have the option of their name being displayed on the beach entrance of their choice, connecting the community for years to come.
“I think it’s a really good idea. It gives the community a way to get involved and do their part to help rebuild the shore. With an affordable price, everyone can give just a little and still show how strong the support of locals can be,” said Frank McGovern, a 19-year-old, bioscience major from Neptune City.
To participate, donors may buy their board online with a credit card at, or with a check by downloading the form to send into Borough Hall.
