Deftones Bassist Chi Cheng Dies at 42, ‘Fought the Good Fight’

   Both musicans and fans alike in the rock community were saddened with the news of Deftones bassist Chi Cheng’s passing on Saturday, April 13.
   Cheng, one of the founding members of the band, died at 3 a.m. on Saturday morning after having been in a coma since 2008 following injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident in which he was ejected from his vehicle. 
   Cheng, who was said to have been making progress recently and was no longer in a coma, but rather a semi-consious state, was even able to move parts of his body upon doctors requests.
   “His heart just suddenly stopped,” said Jeanne Marie Cheng, Chi’s mother, via the OneLoveForChi website, which had been set up to collect donations and let fans show support for Cheng throughout his recovery.
   “He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear. He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone,” said Cheng’s mother in a message to fans on
   Among friends and fellow musicans that expressed their sadness through Twitter were Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine,) Corey Taylor (Slipknot, Stone Sour,) Rob Zombie and John 5.

Rob Zombie: I just read the terrible news that Chi Cheng from the Deftones has died. This is very sad. I’ve toured with The Deftones several times over the years and Chi was a really cool fun guy. He will be missed.
   Deftones continued recording and touring in Cheng’s absence and have released two albums since the accident including Diamond Eyes and Koi no Yokan. Cheng was one of the founding members of Deftones and his contributions can be found on Adrenaline, Around the Fur, White Pony, Saturday Night Wrist, Deftones(self-titled,) and B-Sides and Rarites.
   Chi’s son Gabriel recently joined the Deftones on stage for a performance of the song “Root.” Cheng was 42.
