By Alison Graves

Brookdale’s Big Read program encourages students to read and discuss books. The current book is “A Lesson Before Dying,” by Ernest J. Gaines, which the readers will converse about during meetings such as book clubs, libraries, and arts agencies.
The Center for Holocaust, Human Rights, and Genocide Education, or Chhange, has been positively recognized for introducing the Big Read to Monmouth County as well as Brookdale students.
Founded by the National Endowment for the Arts, The Big Read program is also associated with Arts Midwest.
The purpose of the program is to not only motivate people to read more often, it is also meant to identify its relevance to contemporary situations.
Chhange selected “A Lesson Before Dying” to send out the underlying message pertaining to dignifying one’s self and how valued justice is in society.
The Big Read program is open to all Monmouth County residents and welcomes all Brookdale students.
For more information, students may contact Brookdale Community College at (732) 224-2345 or visit
