"I can't get enough thanks to our IT staff who did not sleep the whole time," Dr. Maureen Murphy told the Board of Trustees at the Nov. 15 meeting. The president emphasized throughout the meeting how proud she was of the college, including the faculty, students and the community who came together after Hurricane Sandy.
Murphy explained how social media played a huge part in helping relay important up-to-date messages to students. She also said all six of Brookdale's sites recovered from Sandy well, leaving the campuses with little to no damage. However, each location re-opened when power was restored there.
The communication strategies the college used were the emergency text messaging service, Facebook, the school's radio station 90.5 FM and Twitter.
"We have to support our students as much as we can without extending the semester," Murphy said, discussing how Brookdale is doing the best it can to help students complete the semester on time.
The college couldn't extend the semester without running into the winter term. Therefore, Brookdale has set up outside-of-class strategies, such as additional student-support services online, extra hours, including Sundays, in the library and learning centers.
Murphy also urged students to turn to the counseling staff to make the best academic choices.
Brookdale played a significant role in Monmouth County's storm efforts. The college was a staging area for JCP&L. It also was the location for a Humane Society shelter for hundreds of dogs and cats. The school also donated foods to the Keansburg shelter, and Brookdale police officers volunteered to patrol in Keansburg as well.
"Community is our middle name. There isn't anybody here who wasn't touched," Murphy said.
Brookdale is coming together and helping out as much as possible, not only in the college, but also in the community, she said.
