The Jersey Blues Women’s basketball team improved to 1-1 this season, notching an impressive 82-59 win in their home opener over the Division II Burlington Lady Barons.
The Jersey Blues got off to a slow start, being held without a field goal for the first three minutes of the game, and struggled to hit any shots from close range early on.
But they more than made up for it by nailing nine three-pointers in the first half, including six from sophomore guard Victoria DeTata, who finished the game with a team-high 21 points.
“Our guards can shoot the three, we know that.
You don’t want to do that all the time, but it’s nice to fall back on when the other shots aren’t going down,” co-head coach Marianne Campacci said after the game.
With the game tied at nine with about 13 minutes left in the first half, the Jersey Blues used their long-range buckets to go on a 24-11 run and take a 33-20 lead.
The Lady Barons made a run themselves, closing to within four with under two minutes to go in the half, but when DeTata nailed a half-court shot at the buzzer to put the Jersey Blues up 46-36, the crowd erupted and it just felt that it was going to be Brookdale’s night as they carried their 10-point lead into the locker room.
The Lady Blues slowed the game down and let their forwards do most of their scoring the in second half.
Sophomore Brielle Martinez and freshman Shukurah Washington scored 11 points apiece in the second period and chipped in with several offensive and defensive rebounds to keep the Lady Barons from ever having enough possessions to get back in the game.
“We wanted to give it more to our girls down low in the second half.
We knew they would be ready.
We tried to feel our way through (the second half) and mixed and matched some players, we made some adjustments,” co-head coach Joanne Cobb said after the game.
Four Jersey Blues finished in double-figures, with freshman guard Nicole Collins chipping in with 14 points of her own, and fittingly hitting a long three-pointer with 15 seconds to go in the game.
